(Bourgain-Gamburd-Sarnak).
Title: Approximate groups theory: an introduction to the non-commutative
Freiman problem".
Abstract: We will give an introduction to approximate groups, a notion
defined by T. Tao a few years ago. An approximate group is a finite
subset of an ambient group, which is almost invariant under
multiplication in some precise quantitative sense. The structure of
approximate groups has not yet been fully understood in the general
case. However such a structure theory is now available, thanks to
several recent works, for approximate subgroups of abelian or nilpotent
groups, and for algebraic groups over an arbitrary field. In this
course, we will introduce the basic tools from additive combinatorics in
a non-commutative setting (Ruzsa inequality, Balog-Szemeredi-Gowers
lemma, multiplicative energy, etc.). Then we will describe the above
results in some detail (in particular the theorems of Freiman, Ruzsa,
Helfgott, also the sum-product phenomenon of Bourgain-Katz-Tao). If time
permits, we will give applications of those theorems to expander graphs
(Bourgain-Gamburd) and to the affine sieve (Bourgain-Gamburd-Sarnak).
